What is Hospice?

· Hospice is a form of medical care that focuses on palliative (pain control)
measures rather than curative measures. 

· Hospice care is generally recommended by a physician when he or she
feels the two of you can no longer improve your condition, but rather focus
on making you as comfortable as possible during your end-of-life stage.

· Hospice is recommended for nearly every type of condition, ranging from
cancer to congestive heart failure (CHF) to Alzheimer’s.  With hospice care,
you are in control of your comfort levels and we work with you, your family,
and your physician to help you decide what is right for you.

· Hospice provides physical, emotional, and spiritual care, attending to all
your needs and those of your loved ones during this time.

· Hospice is provided in a client’s home setting, whether it is a skilled nursing
facility, residential facility, or their own home.

  What hospice is not… 

· Hospice is not a one-size-fits-all approach to comfort to comfort measures
and pain control.  Every person experiences different events during this
time, so different medications and dosages are identified for each patient
based on physician recommendations.

· Hospice is not just for cancer patients.  Hospice can be appropriate for any
type of condition if your physician has established you are at the end of life.

· When a physician recommends hospice, it does not mean you must enter
a skilled nursing facility to receive care.

· Hospice is not going to help you die, we are going to help you to be more
comfortable - suffering need not be a part of death.
